Does Every Addict Need Rehab?

I think we've all been conditioned to believe that, if you have a serious drug problem, especially with opiates, the only way path to sobriety is rehab.

We've all seen Intervention- the highly dramatic family meetings, the before-and-after photos.

But what if you "look" fine? What if you're holding down a full time, highly demanding job?

What if you're still meeting all your deadlines, and fulfilling your duties as a parent, a partner, and an employee?

These addicts are more common than we think. These are the addicts that are underrepresented in the media- because it's much more exciting and glamorous to see someone flailing.

Addiction doesn't always look like that.

Addiction can be quiet. It can be private. It can be a one-person show- where even close family members have no idea.

There are "functional addicts" that can keep this up for years without slipping. But eventually, they will.

High earning individuals can keep up appearances for a long time, but eventually, they'll start missing appointments. Their health will suffer, their sleep becomes interrupted.

You can get out before rock bottom... it is 100% possible. I've seen it and lived it.

I think a lot of people avoid sobriety because they believe they need to "go away" to rehab, or they'll be expected to commit to a huge time commitment- meetings several times a week, random drug screens, etc. This simply is not realistic for many full time employees and parents- and so they continue to suffer in silence- often not even telling their intimate partners.

You can get sober without telling your partner, your employer, or your friends.

I'm not here to judge you for seeking out private care- who you tell or don't tell is your business.
